Bello lifts deployment moratorium to Qatar

Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III on Thursday lifted the moratorium on the deployment of Filipino workers to Qatar upon consultation with the Department of Foreign Affairs and upon recommendation of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office.

“This decision was arrived at on the advise of Foreign Affairs Secretary Allan Peter Cayetano and upon the recommendation of Qatar POLO following their assessment of the situation in the Gulf state,” Bello said.

Saying the situation has normalized, Labor Attaché David Des Dicang and the Philippine Embassy even requested the deployment of newly-hired workers to Qatar, particularly to the Philippine School Doha (PSD) and Philippine International SchoolQatar (PISQ).

“We respectfully request to allow the deployment so as not to hamper the operations of our Philippine schools and to allay fears of the revocation of their school permits issued by the Qatar government,” Dicang said.

A total of 28 new teachers and 20 bus drivers of PSD and 51 new teachers of PISQ have pending applications with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).

The Philippine Embassy and POLO also recommended the deployment of an Assessment Team composed of DOLE, POEA, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs of DFA to Qatar to meet with the government authorities and companies providing employment to Filipino workers.

POLO is also continuously coordinating with the Qatari authorities to discuss possible difficulties regarding the repatriation of distressed OFWs temporarily accommodated at the Migrant Workers and other Overseas Filipinos Resource Center (MWOFRC), and are looking into the possible situation of Household Service Worker (HSWs) of non-Qatari employers, who will be left in the country or will be forced to travel with their employers.

Also, the Qatari government guaranteed the safety of around 240,000 Filipinos in Qatar and affirmed that they have the ability to withstand any possible economic shocks out of the diplomatic impasse with its neighboring Arab countries.

Meanwhile, OFWs in Qatar have expressed confidence for their safety with the strengthened efforts of the labor department and other concerned government agencies in ensuring their basic welfare and security amid the diplomatic crisis.

Bello ordered the temporary suspension in the deployment of OFWs to Qatar last week to secure the welfare and security of OFWs in case of any eventuality after some neighboring Arab states cut diplomatic ties with the Gulf state.

Update on suspension of OFW deployment for Qatar

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III on June 7 announced the partial lifting of the suspension of deployment of overseas Filipino workers to Qatar. Newly-hired workers already in possession of OEC and returning workers or balik-manggagawa are allowed to leave. The deployment of those with pending application or newly-hired OFWs, however, is held in abeyance until further assessment is made.

Telstra announces free calls to the Philippines in response to Typhoon Haiyan

Customers of Telstra, Australia’s leading telecommunications and information services company, who wish to check on family and friends affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines can call or text them free of charge.

All standard voice calls and SMS messages made to the Philippines between 6 a.m. on Monday, November 11, and 6 a.m. on Monday, November 25 from Telstra fixed or mobile services will be free of charge for its retail customers.

Gordon Ballantyne, Group Executive Telstra Retail, said Telstra wanted to offer support to its customers during this difficult time.

“We want to help our customers who are concerned about their friends and relatives in the Philippines affected by the devastating typhoon to check on loved ones. Calls and text messages to the Philippines will not be billed during this time,” he said.

Ballantyne said that while communication lines in the Philippines remain open in affected areas, customers were likely to encounter network congestion.

“We encourage customers to remain patient as difficulties and delays may be experienced when trying to connect,” he added.

In addition to providing assistance to our Australian customers, Telstra will match staff payroll giving contributions made to the Typhoon Haiyan Appeal activated by the Australian Red Cross.

“Telstra has strong ties to the Philippines, with a number of employees based there, and many employees in Australia with family and friends affected by the disaster,” Ballantyne said. “During this difficult period we hope these small gestures provide some comfort to those in need.”

The free calls and SMS offer applies to standard voice calls and SMS messages made from Australian (+61) Telstra fixed or mobile services to +63 (Philippines) numbers. For some calls, credits may be applied after the call or to the next bill.

OFWs: Beware of Philippine Prudential

I would like to share my story to all overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) since I heard that they are the target of these guys.

July 1, 2013 – Monday, my husband birthday and we decided to celebrate it at SM Fairview after we fetch Sundae in school.

We arrived at around past 12pm and we want to have our lunch immediately. Then there is this gay, Kelvin Flores, who approached us and introduced himself as an agent from Philippine Prudential. He said he will give us a freebie, gym bag or wall clock. They are not selling anything just a product presentation. Just to be polite, we gave him a moment to entertain him.

He said we have a chance to win a car, trip to Thailand or event a cash. We just need to listen to the 45-minute presentation. Since it’s for free and we are not really in a hurry, we give it a try. Honestly, I have been invited by a gay named Rannie in Gateway Mall in Cubao, but, I left my card holder in the office so he said that I just came back in the afternoon. I have all the access to the internet but unfortunately I was not able to do research after that due to my hectic schedule.

Going back, we signed up the form that tells that we are willing to attend the 45-minute presentation. He walk us to their office at the lower ground floor of SM Fairview. Just like Kelvin, they all look approachable, and then they introduce me to Jessica Joy Paviscino (not sure with her last name). We listen carefully although I’m not actually interested to whatever they will offer since I already have a Sunlife Insurance and a UITF, we are after the raffle, since I thought that this might be a birthday gift to my husband.

While listening to the presentation, they took care of Sundae at the next table. So nice isn’t it?

We didn’t notice that the 45-minute presentation lapsed to what they promised. And now my Sundae is having tantrums. So my husband decided to go out and play at the Grolier shop next to the Philippine Prudential’s office. While my husband is being warned by the staffs, they are not offering me to avail the Endowment Savings, which I only have to pay Php9,000 and no monthly installment after that. I said no since I cannot afford to open for another account and might not be able to support all the finances. But they really insist that the offer is not a GASTOS instead IPON.

And now another agent came forcing me to avail kahit magkano lang mam. I said I have a discipline when it comes to shelling out money.

Good thing, Sundae is now crying so we were able to leave the place.

So next time you see gays/gals from Philippine Prudential, turn away from them. I believe you can afford to travel or even buy a car without them.

Scam Alert: Beware of Fake Job Offer for Nanny to US

To warn Filipino jobseekers and to stop a fraudulent activity, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) revealed on its site a new email scam that offers fake nanny jobs for a supposed employer in USA.

 According to the POEA Chief, Hans Leo J. Cacdac, he received a memorandum from the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Washington DC. The labor attaché, Luzviminda Padilla endorsed the case of a Filipino who seek the assistance of POLO in verifying a job offer from a certain Barrister Martin Bishop which is a nanny job for Mrs. Julie Adams of 206 Springfield Avenue, Newark, New Jersey 007114 USA. 

In the said job offer, Martin Bishop claimed that he is associated with Macroberts Solicitors based in New Jersey. The poor victim was lured by the job details sent via email that he sent USD276.99 via Western Union to Qunesha Clewis of 1520 Sepulveda Ave., Apt. G, San Bernardino, California.

Survey Says More PH Workers Are Not Satisfied With Their Salary Increase

Many Philippine companies may be giving their employees a yearly salary increase but it seems that majority of the workers are not satisfied with it.

If you are a regular worker in a Philippine company that receives yearly salary increase and are satisfied with the raise, be grateful and count yourself lucky because apparently, not all employees in the Philippines enjoy this privilege. This conclusion is based from the result of an informal survey conducted among site visitors of JobOpenings.ph, a site that features employment opportunities in the Philippines. The survey was also asked among the members of its Facebook community.

In the survey entitled “Do you get salary increase every year,” the answers of the respondents are almost even with 57% answering Yes, they do get a yearly pay raise and 43% said No.

However a discrepancy is seen when those who answered “yes” are further asked if they are satisfied with the yearly raise their company provides. Apparently 69% of those who are given an increase are not satisfied with it as only 31% answered Yes. Majority of these respondents said that their salary increase by 5 to 10 percent and it is mainly based on work performance.

When asked what they think is the appropriate percentage for salary increase, majority answered that it should be from 20 to 50 percent. Most of the respondents are employed full time (89%) while only 11% are employed on a part time or freelance basis. Ninety-two percent are working for private companies while only 8% are employed in government offices.

This informal survey was conducted among site visitors of JobOpenings.ph from November 13, 2012 to January 24, 2013.

Survey Says Many OFWs Are Not Satisfied With their Overseas Jobs

Many Filipinos dream of working overseas to seek a greener pasture. They are willing to take the challenge of working in an unfamiliar country and endure years of being separated from their loved ones for years.

One may therefore assume that the decision to accept an overseas job is most of the time worth it, that the workers would finally find the job security and satisfaction they are looking for. Sadly, an informal survey conducted by site visitors of WorkAbroad.ph and OFWGuide.com showed that many Filipinos working abroad are still dissatisfied with their current employment status.

In the survey question, “Are You Happy or Satisfied with Your Current Work Abroad,” 68% of the respondents answered “No” which shows that only 32% of them are happy or satisfied with their current overseas post. The said survey was conducted from November 10, 2012 to January 25, 2013.  It also appeared in the Facebook page of WorkAbroad.ph.

When asked of the reasons why they are generally unhappy with their current work, majority (49%) said that it is because of low salary and poor employee benefits. It is followed by the fact that their employers are mean and unfair and do not recognize their hard work (35%). Other responses cite their work challenges as boring (14%) and the remaining 2% do not get along with their co-workers.

From the responses above, the answer to the question, “What do you think are the factors that should be present to ensure an employee's job satisfaction” is easy to predict. Majority (72%) cited great compensation package as the most important factor. This is closely followed by work environment that allows for work-life balance, fair company policies and an environment that fosters employee development.

In the Facebook page discussion, the number of satisfied OFWs is almost equal with that of the unsatisfied ones and most of the reasons cited for job contentment are fair superiors, attractive salary and good benefits. Those who are unhappy with their current overseas post said that they find their employers unfair and their salary too low.
